JAMMU : In a major push to bridge the digital divide, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has approved provision of land for installation of mobile towers in 12 underserved areas across the Union Territory.
According to a post on X, by the Office of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, land has been approved in *Uri, Tangmarg, Karnah, Kalakote, Kralpora, Basantgarh, Khour, Latti Marothi, Banihal, Pogal Paristan, Ramsoo and Qila Darhal* under the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF).
The initiative is aimed at expanding high-speed telecom coverage across J&K, particularly in remote and border villages that have remained without reliable mobile and internet connectivity for years.
Once operational, the towers will strengthen connectivity in far-flung areas, support online education for students, enable access to e-governance services, improve emergency communication during natural calamities and help in overall socio-economic development.
The government said the move will ensure last-mile connectivity and bring border and hilly areas at par with urban centres in terms of digital access.
Locals of these areas have long demanded mobile connectivity, especially in Karnah, Uri, Basantgarh and Pogal Paristan where students and residents face immense difficulties due to poor network.
Further formalities for installation of towers are expected to begin soon, officials said.
