SHOPIAN :J&K Police in Shopian have arrested a man for alleged impersonation and cheating of a cancer patient’s family.
Police said complaint was received on CUG mobile of Police Station Shopian from Farooq Ahmad Sofi, resident of Manghama, who had posted an appeal on social media seeking financial assistance for treatment of his son suffering from cancer.
Taking advantage of the appeal, the accused identified as Umar Shameem Ganie resident of Memander, Shopian, allegedly impersonated as an employee of DC Office Shopian and assured the family that he would help in getting financial aid from Deputy Commissioner Shopian for treatment. On this pretext, he allegedly took Rs 9,999 from complainant.
The accused was later traced by complainant in Shopian market where he allegedly manhandled, intimidated and threatened him.
Accordingly, e-FIR has been registered at Police Station Shopian and accused has been arrested.
Preliminary investigation has also revealed allegations of similar cheating by accused with other persons, which are being verified.
Investigation is underway.
Meanwhile Shopian Police have urged public to remain vigilant against online fraudsters and impersonators, especially those who misuse genuine appeals for financial help. Public has been advised to verify credentials of persons claiming to facilitate assistance on behalf of government offices and report suspicious activity to police immediately.
